FURY AT PICKET'S SHOW

by Tony Bridger

A swearing, spitting comedian was booed off the stage at the Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliffe.

Ronnie Golden's act incensed the audience so much the chanted Off, Off, Off.

And before he wenr he challenged "Do you want me to p-----off?"

The audience cheered and Golden, from Tottenham, North London, picked up his guitar and walked off. The Flying Pickets, bill-toppers at Saturday night's concert apologised for him.

Golden had shocked the concert-goers, including children and pensioners. When he spat and said things like "I've got some wretched habits. You should see me on the toilet."

Some people stalked out of the theatre and staff had to console others.

Flying Picket Brian Hibbard, a former lay preacher, told the audience: "We apologise for the entertainment you were subjected to during the first half

"We have not worked with Ronnie Golden for about two years. He will not be working with us again."

A Southend woman who went to see the show with a friend told the Echo: "This so-called comedian started his foul language and four letter words as soon as he got on the stage.

"The filth in his act was lower than gutter talk. If he had used language like that in the streets he could have been charged with insulting behaviour."

"A couple and their young boy came out of the theatre. The boy was crying. A man from London with his 13-year-old son to see the show was disgusted as well.

"We demanded that the manager get this comedian off immediately, but he didn't, so I went back inside and shouted Everybody out.

"At that point everyone started calling out Off, Off, Off, Out, Out.

Mr Chas Mumford, Cliffs Pavilion manager, said: "The man upset a lot of people.

"It was one of those unfotunate things where the comedian comes as part of a package from the agency. I have never seen anything like it here before.
